South Padre's Ultimate Inshore Fishing Challenge

Get ready to test your skills on the rich waters of South Padre Island with Capt. Chris of Reel Good Style Charters. This full-day trip is tailor-made for serious anglers looking to push their limits and load up on trophy catches. You'll spend 8 action-packed hours hitting the island's most productive inshore spots, from skinny flats to deeper channels where the big boys lurk. Whether you're chasing bull reds, gator trout, or doormat flounder, Capt. Chris knows exactly where to put you on the fish.

Trip Overview

This ain't your average boat ride, folks. We're talking about a hardcore fishing mission where you'll be working different techniques all day long. Drift fishing, jigging, popping corks, sight casting - you name it, we'll do it. Capt. Chris is dialed into the seasonal patterns, so you'll be targeting whatever's biting best. Most days that means redfish, speckled trout, and flounder, but don't be surprised if you tangle with some hefty black drum or sheepshead too. The beauty of South Padre is the variety - one minute you might be sight casting to tailing reds in ankle-deep water, the next you could be working a deep channel for monster trout. Pack your sunscreen and get ready to sling some serious bait.

Techniques & Terrain

On this trip, you'll cover all the bases of inshore fishing. We'll start by reading the water and conditions to figure out where the fish are holding. Might be drifting grass flats with soft plastics, or maybe we'll set up on a deep hole and jig for flounder. If the redfish are tailing on the flats, we'll ease in quietly and sight cast to them. Popping corks are deadly for trout when they're feeding up in the water column. Capt. Chris will show you how to work each technique effectively, and you'll have plenty of time to dial in your presentation. The Laguna Madre is like one giant fish highway, with shallow flats, deep channels, oyster reefs, and grass beds all holding different species. We'll hit multiple spots throughout the day to maximize your chances at a diverse bag.

Target Species

Redfish: The bulldogs of the flats, redfish are pound-for-pound some of the hardest fighting inshore fish you'll tangle with. In South Padre, we get shots at fish from little rats up to big bulls over 40 inches. They love to cruise the shallows, often with their backs out of the water, making for some exciting sight fishing opportunities. Fall is prime time for big schools of bull reds to show up, but you can catch quality fish year-round. There's nothing quite like watching a big red inhale your lure in two feet of water.

Speckled Trout: If you're after pure eating quality, it's hard to beat a mess of fat speckled trout. These spotted beauties can be found from the flats to the deeper channels, and they put up a great fight on light tackle. We catch them year-round in South Padre, but the biggest gator trout typically show up in winter and early spring. Don't be surprised to hook into some 5+ pounders if conditions are right. Specks are suckers for live shrimp under a popping cork, but they'll also crush topwater lures and soft plastics.

Southern Flounder: Often overlooked by casual anglers, flounder are prized by those in the know for both their fight and their fantastic table fare. These ambush predators like to hang around structure and drop-offs, waiting to pounce on unsuspecting baitfish. Fall is the best time to target big flounder as they migrate to spawn, but you can catch them year-round if you know where to look. Jigging soft plastics along bottom contours is a great way to entice a bite from these tasty flatfish.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

South Padre Island is a fishing paradise, plain and simple. The diversity of species and habitats means every trip is different, and there's always a chance at that personal best catch. Capt. Chris has been guiding these waters for years, and he's got the local knowledge to put you on fish when others are coming up empty. Whether you're looking to fill the cooler or land that trophy catch of a lifetime, this full-day trip gives you the best shot at success. Plus, there's just something special about watching the sun rise over the Laguna Madre as you're heading out to your first spot of the day. It's the kind of experience that keeps anglers coming back year after year.

Time to Book Your Spot

Chris of Reel Good Style Charters will work his tail off to put you on quality fish all day long. You'll come away with new skills, great memories, and hopefully a cooler full of tasty fillets. But fair warning - spots fill up fast, especially during peak seasons. So if you're ready to test your skills against South Padre's finest, don't wait. Book your trip now and get ready for a day on the water you won't soon forget. The fish are waiting - are you ready to answer the call?

Redfish

Redfish are the stars of our flats here in South Padre. These copper-colored beauties usually run 20-30 inches, but the big bulls can hit 45 inches and 50 pounds. Look for them tailing in super shallow water, sometimes with their backs sticking out. They love cruising over mud bottoms and around oyster reefs. Fall is prime time when they school up to spawn. Anglers can't get enough of their powerful runs and hard-fighting spirit. For a real rush, try sight-casting to them in clear water. A local trick: on calm days, listen for them crushing bait – it sounds like someone smacking the water. Live bait like mullet works great, but for pure fun, nothing beats watching a redfish explode on a topwater lure. Just be ready to hold on tight when they make that first run!

Redfish

Sea Trout

These silvery fighters are a blast to catch around South Padre. Typically 14-24 inches long, sea trout love hanging out in grass flats and shallow waters, especially at night. They're most active in fall and spring when water temps are just right. Anglers go nuts for 'em because of their acrobatic jumps and tasty, flaky white meat. To land a good one, try drifting live shrimp or small crabs along dropoffs. If that's not working, switch to topwater lures at dawn or dusk – the strikes can be explosive. Just remember, sea trout have soft mouths, so set the hook gently. These fish school up in deeper channels during winter, so that's when you might hook into the real monsters. Whether you're after a trophy or just want some great eating, sea trout fishing here is hard to beat.

Sea Trout

Southern Flounder

Southern flounder are the ninjas of our local waters. These flat ambush predators can grow to 15-18 inches, with some monsters hitting 30+ inches. You'll find them lurking on sandy or muddy bottoms in bays and estuaries. Fall is the time to target them as they migrate to deeper waters for spawning. Anglers love flounder for their unique challenge and killer table fare. To catch 'em, you've gotta think like a flounder. Try slow-dragging a live mullet or shrimp along the bottom, especially around drop-offs and structure. Here's a local secret: on incoming tides, focus on points where water's flowing into the bays – flounder stack up to ambush bait. When you feel that telltale thump, give 'em a second before setting the hook. It takes finesse, but landing a big flounder is worth the patience.
